Mobile 3D graphics on mobile terminals is the significant ongoing research. By considering the limitations of the mobile terminals, such as low processor performance, limit storage space, small display screen, narrow wireless bandwidth, the investigation of the progressive display of mobile 3D graphics is highly necessary. This paper focuses on a progressive mesh compression algorithm for mobiles; the following work has been accomplished:First, by doing some researches on triangular mesh compression method, this paper suggest a PM algorithm for mobiles. The error calculation, selecting the collapsing-edge and the compress algorithm for base mesh were improved. We use smallest dihedral and shortest edge as principles for choosing collapsing edges it performs better in details. And then using locking one-ring adjacent method to achieve progressive encode; this makes the transition between different levels smoothly.Second, for texture meshes, this paper presents a visual important feature maintaining algorithm for 3D texture models. Take texture factors into collapsing-edge choosing can better preserve the important details of the model. Compare with other algorithms, even the low-resolution model can also get a good visual effect.Finally, based on the theories above, we achieved the total system. By comparing the test results of several classical models, the algorithm in this paper can obtain better compression and visual effects and has its certain application value.
