With the growing demand for electricity, the substation equipment of load shows constantly increasing, and at the same time the failure and accident caused by hot defects are constantly emerging, leading to economic loss to increase. In order to find hot defects of equipment timely and effectively, and protect power transmission system of efficient continuous operation, this paper uses the infrared imaging as a method of the power equipment fault diagnosis, to achieve device fault diagnosis.First this paper analyzes the background, significance and application status at home and abroad of infrared technology applications at power equipment fault diagnosis. It discusses theory of infrared fault diagnosis, mechanism of failure and way of infrared diagnosis. For the power station features, the paper formulates a research process using in electrical equipment of infrared fault diagnosis.Second, the infrared image acquisition system uses TMS320C6416 as core device, MAX9526 as video decoder, CPLD as acquisition controller, and FIFO buffer as data transferring middleware. The paper carries out program and data memory expansion of DSP, and designs two communication modes: USB and serial port.At last, the paper introduces infrared image processing related algorithm. The whole system uses Visual Basic6.0 as main development tool, and borrows MatrixVB as image processing tool in program. In fault diagnosis, the paper uses three main diagnostic methods, including image statistical information, single-point monitoring and infrared imaging diagnosis, and mainly adopts the fuzzy theory to realize equipment automatic diagnosis. The information of fault diagnosis uses separation access between text and image.To test the feasibility of this system, the last part of the paper uses cable lug as target of experiment, and diagnostic result obtained is basically correspond with the actual. Thus, this research system is reliability and validity.
