Information Retrieval means the procession of orderly identifying and searching for knowledge information. The rapid development of information and its technology has made network-based Search Engine the preferred tool for information retrieving. Though the network-based Search Engine technique has become quite available, there is a performance problem of applying such a technique to handheld devices of low hardware configuration.Based on an profound analysis of the popular Search Engine technique, this thesis provides a Search Engine solution suitable for use in low price and low hardware configuration handheld devices by combining the knowledge of handheld devices with the information retrieving potentiality of the popular search engine technique. The solution mainly involves the following two designs:1. Database architecture design. Through analysis and research on Chinese word segmentation, the author made a comparison between the keyword-based method and word location based method by experiment. It was found that a database architecture using the later method is more appropriate on the condition of limited hardware configuration.2. Implementation in Handheld devices. It is necessary that database architecture can be used in the handheld devices conveniently and efficiently. So the features of handheld devices have to be taken into consideration, while the architecture is to be designed in handheld devices. How to realize the function in the device is always the first concern when designing the database architecture.Finally, a specific project which is based on the proposed architecture and entitled "Handheld Device based Encyclopedia Information Retrieval" is provided with the entire development flow and key technical difficulties. It is then demonstrated how to apply the design and deploy specific optimizing strategies to this project. It shows that this theory and solution proposed in this thesis is reasonable and feasible, after several times of experiments and amendments with the help of my colleagues.
