With the development of mobile communication, wireless networks and video techniques, many new applications arise, such as wireless PC cameras, mobile camera phones and wireless sensor networks. these emerging applications require light encoding complexity, high compression efficiency, However, the conventional digital video coding standards, such as MPEG, H.263 and H.264, which exploit complex motion estimation at the encoder, cannot meet this need. As such a new video coding paradigm, distributed video coding arises.Side information estimation is one of the key techniques in distributed video coding. It plays an important role in reconstructing frames, and significantly determines the performance of the codec. So designing a good side information estimation algorithm, is very significant to improve the performance of a codec for distributed video coding. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed for the side information estimation. The algorithm is based on region-oriented motion compensation and interpolation, In the algorithm, according to the motion change between two frames, the frames are divided into several regions with different size, and an affine motion model is exploited to describe the motion of the regions, the motion parameters of the regions are then accurated estimated, and a more accurate motion field is obtained. finally, according to the motion parameters, motion compensated interpolation is carried out. the experiment results on test video sequences show, that the proposed algorithm is more accurate to obtain true motion vector field, and the accuracy of side information outperforms those given by block based motion compensated interpolation methods.
