The location of a target based on monocular image, especially the distance estimation is a technology problem, which has importance value both in military affairs and in civil affairs. Supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China,"research on high-speed-moving target ranging passively with real time system based on image & image parameters"(No.60872136), this paper developed a DSP system for locating target in image sequences, it is a practical research on distance estimation based on feature line segment.A review was given on the technology of location a target in image sequence along with the tendency, and then, the hardware construct for location of a target in image sequence was determined. With carefully discussion of passive ranging algorithms based on line segment features in monocular image sequences, a model was proposed for target ranging through a quadratic equation, Compared with the existed quartic equation, this method improved the computing speed. How to select a line segment feature was studied, the novel line segment feature does not depend on the target's characteristic line itself, and both the stability and automation have improved. After debugging, the C subroutine was ported into DM6437, a fixed-point DSP system. A top-to-bottom optimization strategy was adopted in the process, some high-precision calculation modules have built, such as trigonometric functions, exponential function, tangent function, arctan function, Square root function, etc. At last, the line segment feature error result from the image sequence procession error was discussed. It is showed by experiment that both the size error and the distance ratio error are less than 4%, which are very close to the result of float C subroutine. The distance estimation error is less than 9%. These work laid the foundation for realizing location of a target in image sequence.
