The detection,identification and tracking of infrared small target under complex background has been regarded as attractive research topics in modern military applcations.As for the real weapon systems,how to make the best of IR target detection techniques to increase the distance of target detection and to obtain the related information about the invading targets,has become important factors to decide the victory or defeat in modern warfare. The longer the distance of targets,the less the imaging area of targets and the larger the probabilities of targets influenced by backround and clutter will be. Therefore,comparing with other topics in the field of IR target detection and tracking,how small targets can be robustly detected and tracked under complex background have become the more realistic and challenging research topics.The empirical mode decomposition(EMD)introduced by Norden E Huang is a new multi-scale analysis method.It is suitable for non-1inear and non-stationary signal processing.It is considered as an important breakthrough for non-stationary signal analysis methods which are based on Fourier transform.The EMD method has been proved in one-dimensional signal processing and many authors have achieved some results. Because of the complexity in bidimensional signal,the general bidimensional EMD has many defects needed to be researched.Aiming at the complex background infrared dim-small target detection problem, this paper applys the EMD method to infrared dim-small target detection by using the excellent characteristics in dealing with non-linear and non-stationary signal .And it expands the area of research in infrared small target detection. The main tasks of this thesis are:1.Explain the imaging principle,model and characteristics of the infrared image. Introduce the classification and features of the infrared image noise.Detect the infrared small target by using the traditional detection methods .2.Explain the concept of the instantaneous frequency and the intrinsic mode function ,the principle and technical characteristic of the EMD method.Analyze the advantages in dealing with the non-linear and non-stationary signal of the method.3.Introduce the EMD method into the two-dimensional images.Research the extreme value point and construction of interpolation surfaces problems and analyse the questions in this section.4.In this dissertation,we analyze the bidimensional EMD method.The implement approaches are given.The multi-scale decompositions are completed for a great deal experimentation well and truly.
