Color management is a processing technology through which gray images are colored. This technology originates from NASA Apollo project in the 70th 20 century, whose aim is to analyze the images photographed from outer space by Apollo. With the continual development of science and technology, this technique is gradually applied to some other scientific fields, such as medical realm, industry and aerospace domain. The technology of color management involves the general technology that exists in lots of graph and image processing; therefore, today the research in color management still gets an active and challenging role in the field of graph and image processing.Color management is further divided into pseudo-color processing and false-color processing in terms of processing mode and application purpose. In pseudo-color processing, the processed gray images don't have color attribute themselves. The way that changes these gray images into colored ones lies in image mapping. It is image mapping that makes gray images colored, while there are no other meanings for these images to get color. It is just to emphasize some details in a particular image so as to accomplish the deep analysis of gray images in a clear and simple way. On the contrary, the targets of false-color processing are those gray images originally having colors, but losing the color during imaging procedure, which makes the images incomplete. The essence of false-color processing is to imitate the real scenes with the goal to reconstruct the original color in the image, making use of the objective understanding or prediction of people towards scenic color, together with color technology. The final aim is to realize the completeness of the incomplete images. This thesis will discuss image false-color processing. On the basis of studying the current methods, the author attempts to improve the past algorithm, and put forward a rapid, effective and accurate processing approach to color the gray images. The creative points mainly lie in the following three aspects1. The author makes a theoretic summarization for gray image color-management. In this thesis, through investigating the causes that lead to the morbid images and the corresponding processing technology, the author divides the color management into two parts: comparison-oriented "color reference" technique and partial-color-oriented "color extension" technique. 2.The author advances a new pattern of image segmentation in light of "color extension" technique. This type of segmentation sets base on the visual process of human eyes, whose result depends on the impression and experience of the people to the objects in image. Under this pattern, the author regards original color as seed region, and does clustering on basis of the-shortest-distance rule in order to achieve global segmentation for gray image.3.By summarizing and analyzing the past "color extension" color management algorithm, the author brings up an original vision in gray-image color management which is based on image zoning. This new technique combines the image segmentation and over-segmentation method; besides, it adds colors under the principle of "color extension". The advantage of this approach is that it could realize the coloring process of the relatively big size of gray images in a rapid, effective and accurate manner.
