With a long history and a wide variety, Dunhuang frescos are seen as "artistic treasure" of human beings worldwide. However, due to the destructions from both nature and mankind, Dunhuang frescos have been seriously damaged and are in urgent need of protection. The introduction of digital image technology into Dunhuang arts brings a best way to record fresco information completely, so that it can be permanently preserved. While a remote fresco browsing system can provide more precise and detailed research materials for archaeological and art scholars and enable tourists to enjoy beautiful mural paintings without entering caves. According to these application backgrounds, this papers designs and implements a remote high-resolution image browsing system.For mural paintings are all very huge, the existing image formats cannot store and retrieve image data efficiently. Besides, the current big image browsing systems need time-consuming image preprocessing. This paper focuses on these two technological difficulties and did some research work as below:First of all, this paper researches on image pyramid construction technology. An image pyramid can be used to store a multi-resolution image, so as to enhance interactive effect of client sides. In order to construct an image pyramid with both good performance and high speed, an improved bicubic interpolation algorithm is proposed. With the powerful parallel computing ability of CUDA, image preprocessing time is reduced much more. According to related experiments, it can even avoid preprocessing step and achieve real-time browsing.Secondly, this paper researches on storage and access technology of high-resolution murals. Transmitting image blocks on-demand can reduce transmission amount and accelerate image display speed. BIM image format given by this paper uses pyramid structure, each pyramid layer is stored by the way of continuous image blocks, so as to make image blocks be read much faster. Besides, in order to improve the fluency of image browsing, this paper also designs a cache algorithm for image blocks.Finally, this paper implements a remote image browsing system using the technologies mentioned above. The system has a good performance and is being used now.
