Since 2002, the left-handed materials(LHM) has been one hot spot in the research field of electromagnetic(em.) field. Many scientists have made great progresses not only in mechanism and features of LHM, but also in development of technical applications at antenna miniaturization using LHM.First, the concept and exotic em. properties of LHM are introduced, and the development status and related applications are reviewed. Negative permittivity and negative permeability realization mechanism are derived theoretically, and its double negative characteristics are displays visually through numerical simulation. It's analysed the development status and applications of LHM in the weapon equipment systems (WES) and it's explored the potentiality and its significance of LHM in the future WES.Second, it's studied the regularities of electromagnetic response of LHM and it's drawn many significant conclusions by structure changing of main structural parameters which is helpful for the design of LHM.It's also presented the discussion of applicationes of LHM in miniaturized antennas.First, the composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH) structure of LHM is analyzed and the potential application of CRLH in miniaturized antennas is figured out. Then, the related theoretical bases are introduced. Finally, the miniaturized 1.6GHz antenna which is used in alrming system for vessels is designed by using CRLH. Simulation results showed that the antenna has many advantages comparing with current antenna, such as small size, simple structure, low profile, low cost, easy to produce and integrate and so on.
