India is a country with many different ethnic groups and multi-culture, and it is far-reaching influenced by the religious culture. There are many factors impact the formation of India’s national characteristics. Among all these complicated factors, Hinduism is a very important one. In this paper, I take the Hindu as the main subject of the India nation. In that case, we can see the India nation get some characteristics such as idealism, individualism, nationalism, hierarchy and nonviolence. In order to show the diplomatic situation of India, I introduce the pattern and the characteristic of India’s foreign policy briefly. The present foreign policy is to take developing relations with big countries as the first priority, improve and consolidate relations with neighboring countries, strengthen cooperation and exchanges with ASEAN, Asian and African countries, and implement a comprehensive diplomacy actively. The characteristic of India’s foreign policy is taking great-power diplomacy as its target, neighboring diplomacy as its base, and cultural diplomacy as its advantage.By studying the nation characteristics’influence to the foreign policy of India, I get follow conclusions. At first, the India’s national characteristics have been affected by Hinduism and it is multiple. Second, the Hindu culture seared into the foreign policy of India. Third, among India’s nation characteristics, nonviolence is the most prominent one, and it has a profound influence to Indian diplomacy. We can see the diplomacy in the nonviolent and noncooperation movements and the Non-aligned Movement. Forth, because of the influence of caste system, Indians hold a hierarchical concept to the whole world. Fifth, with the changes of the international situation, India’s diplomatic concept changed from idealism to realism, but essentially, India still adhere to the traditional moral values of India nation. Sixth, the Indian culture is multiple, and it plays an active role in India’s cultural diplomacy. I hope all these conclusions can produce positive effect to the formulation and implementation of China’s diplomatic strategy and policies.
