| Other than the modernization of economics and the modernization of politics, the moder-nization of humanity is the third aspect of the modernization. It is the evolution of traditional people into modern people. Starting from the Opium War, there are constant discussions and practices on turning Chinese from liege to citizen. This reflects the localization of civic educa-tion in China. This work reviews the history of the civic education in China during the19th and20th century from a theoretic perspective. We first analyze the relationship between civic education and modernization. Being the necessity of humanity modernization, civic education is affected by the reciprocity of the three aspects of the modernization. Then, with the paradigm of moder-nization, we reflect on the development of civic education in China. Next, we focus on the practice of civic modernization after the reform and opening-up of China. Finally, we propose three pieces of empirical suggestion on helping Chinese civic education out of the predicament, based on foreign practices. |
