"Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China"is written by Ezra F.Vogel who ia an American scholar.He took ten years to study Deng Xiaoping and China’s reform and opening.Vogel expressed his admiration to Deng Xiaoping and spoke highly of China’s reform and the great achievements through a lot of research. After the18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, we face the new situation of reform and opening.So we should continue to deepen the reform process. National academic circle has a large number of research on reform and opening up, while foreign scholars’ has the world meaning.Vogel’s view on Deng Xiaoping and his era, make great contributions to academic circle, basede on the rich historical materials.His view point was direct and method was unique,so this book had great research value.In this paper, the first chapter was Introduction. What the writer wanted to express was mainly about the reasons of selecte this topic,and the present study situation of "Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China"at home and abroad. When this book was published, it caused fully attention from the society, winning good reputation at home and abroad.The second chapter was Vogel’s academic works and his contribution. Vogel was the former director of Harvard University’s Fei Zhengqing Center. He was good command of Chinese and Japanese, who was called "Mr China" in Harvard University. He tried to describe Deng Xiaoping objectively, so the research would help the researchers to undersdand Deng Xiaoping’s thought.Besides, this chapter introduced the Vogel’s three books about China.The third chapter introduced Vogel’s book’s advantages and diadvantages. Compared with others’ books about Deng Xiaoping, the writer sumed up the main advantage of Vogel’s work. Firstly, Vogel described the whole life of Deng Xiaoping objectively. Secondly, Vogel described the great process f Chinese reform and opening since1978, which made readers not only understand the history of China’s domestic reform and foreign open deeply, but also understand the socialist road with Chinese characteristics. Thirdly, Vogel put forward the challenges for today’s China in transition. China’s economy developed rapidly, accompanied with many challenges, such as environmental pollution and other social problerms. What should we do? We should come up with positive solution. Finally, the writer sumed up the limitations of the book. The book is the result of foreign scholar’s research. To some extent, some concrete details needed be correted.The fourth chapter was Den Xiaoping and the Transformation of China"’s main features. From the perspective of time and space, Vogel had broad research vision., who described the history From Deng Xiaoping’s birth to1992. The book included economy, politics, culture, military, diplomatic and other aspects. Besides,Vogel provided some unique theoretical perspectives. He thought that Deng Xiaoping was the " general manager" of Chinese reform and opening, instead of the general designer,which made readers to set up the image of Deng Xiaoping as a doer. In addition that the there were different research methods. The book used comparative study method from profile characters to countries. Besides,Vogel field interviewsed with the people related to Deng Xiaoping, using the method of oral history and field trips to write this book.Vogel article last part was the revealing meaning of Vogel’s book. The author thought that Vogel’s book riched the foreign research works about Deng Xiaoping theory, providing us with valuable historical matrials that had not been paid attention to, especially the detail history on Deng Xiaoping g’visits to other countries.The book aroused people to pay attention to China’s reform and focus on the formation of the Chinese road, helping the domestic researchers to introduce the socialist road with Chinese characteristics. Finally the policy of China’s reform and opening up was the result of teamwork wisdom of the whole CPC. We must adhere to the leadership of CPC, only in this way, can China gain further development.
