| This project is aiming to integrate the life experience, social relationships and the left poem manuscript of Zha Shibiao, then comparing his artworks in different periods through study in iconology, to discover his painting styles and features. Furthermore, by observing the changes that the travelling experience offered to Zha Shibiao and the influence that Zha Shibiao brought to Yangzhou painting circle. In addition, this article will try to explain why’Xinan Style’was prevailing in Yangzhou painting circle during Kangxi Dynasty.As the research indicates, the travelling and view exchanging experiences with intimate friends in Yangzhou directly influenced painting skills and technics of Zha Shibiao. While the social background, lifestyle and cultural environment, including the relationship with scholar, businessman and shaman of Yangzhou in Qing Dynasty had a side effect to the change of Zha Shibiao’s painting style, painting arrangement, colours as well as meaning. It was not only preserved the elegance of Hui culture character, but also absorbed the diverse and flexible elements of Yangzhou culture during that time. All these factors had lead his painting style becoming mature and unique. The’Xinan Style’had gained popularity, many scholars offered supports in Yangzhou in early Qing Dynasty. It represented the new appeal of the whole society towards scholar paintings, meanwhile a new function of entertainment among scholars express their emotions. Zha Shibiao removed the extremely local characteristics of’Xinan Style’and enriched it in Yangzhou at that time. It had a deep influence of the rising of Yangzhou painting style in the mid of Qing Dynasty. The importance ZhaShibiao represented in the’history of Xinan Painting Style development’ should be revaluated. |
