As the main course of English major, Intensive Reading is always the object of the course construction and research. Cognitive-code approach confirms and obeys the rules of language acquisition, and it believes the dominant role of students in language teaching, at the same time, it asks for an improvement of ability in the integrated use of language. All these ideas not only accord with the demands of People Oriented principle of Chinese university, but also meet the needs of the syllabus of Intensive Reading for English major.Based on the theories of Cognitive-code approach, teaching process should involve meaningful language practice to help the students master the rules of language, and finally get their competence promoted. This paper aims to apply Cognitive approach to the Intensive Reading course of English major by means of designing a series of teaching methods which are in accord with theories of this approach. The research has been operated in the undergraduate students of Heilongjiang College of Business and Technology, the students major in English and they entered the college in 2014. The whole experiment lasted through the first semester of 2015-2016. The first test includes Grammar and Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension cited from the test paper of TEM 4. After the test, the scores distributed in a normal curve, based on the student’s t test, the two classes were at the same level. According to the statistics, the author randomly picked up an experimental class and a comparing class, the newly designed teaching method was applied in the experimental class, while the comparing class acquired the traditional ways of teaching. At the end of the semester, test the students for the second time. The test paper involves Grammar and Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension cited from TEM 4. The scores of the second test also distributed in a normal curve, t test showed there is a significant difference between experimental class and comparing class, at the same time, the average score of experimental class is higher than the comparing class, the statistics eventually proved the feasibility and effectiveness of Cognitive approach in Intensive Reading.
