Cui Tu was a poet in the late Tang Dynasty. He was good at writing modern style poetry especially five-character octave. He has led a wandering life so that the main theme of his poetry is the loneliness of a wanderer. The main key of his poetry is sentimentality and the language is sincere. What’s more, he liked to use character allusions and had a lot of good poems that were well known by people.This paper is based on the poetry of Cui Tu and the recordation about his lifetime in the ancient books. Moreover, it can be see that the social historical and cultural background in the late Tang Dynasty and the achievements on Cui Tu and his poetry made by the scholars in the past dynasties are combined when the years of his birth and death and his whereabouts were analyzed in this paper. On this basis,this paper studies all of the poetry of Cui Tu from a comprehensive perspective,including collecting his poems, discerning his controversial works, classifying the poetry according to the different subjects, discussing the artistic features of his poetry, collecting the versions of his poems, analyzing the spread of his poetry and so on. The research about the acceptance and spread of Cui Tu’s poetry focus on the anthologies and comments and comes to a conclusion according to quantitative analysis. Specifically, this paper can be divided into the following five parts:The first chapter explores Cui’s life, excluding the year of his birth and death and his whereabouts. This chapter also analyzes the discussion about the research of his life, and combines the record of the date of literature and history, obtains the conclusion that he was born in 848 A.D. Moreover, the places he had travelled were also be explored.The second chapter tries to research his works of poems, and researches it’s particular year, excluding the collection of scattered writings and statistics of his poems, the distinguish of suspicious works, the determination of particular year of his poems. According to my statistics, there are 103 complete poems exist, including63 five-character poems, 13 seven-character poems, 3 five-character rhyme, 24seven-character rhyme. In addition, I series that there is the only one sentence rhyme,“often handshake in every embrace.”The third chapter according to the different themes and topics to Cui’s categorize poetry, four major areas to specific categories:Journey and meditate on anancient event, expressing wills by things, send-off friends, lament the passing of time.Among the type of journey and meditate on an ancient event, include three kinds of work:”revisit the old place, sighing the history”, ”recalling the ancients, expressing resonance” and ”the hard of journey”. Among the type of “send-off friends”, include many kinds of works which according to the friends of poet, such as monk, priest,hermit, literati, official. Among the type of “expressing wills by things”, also include several kinds of work, such as animals, plants and things which point to the emotion of the hardship on journey, idealism and nostalgia.The fourth chapter discusses the artistic characteristics of Cui’s poetry, and sums up the general emotional characteristics of his poems, which include sentimental,bleak, dull and melancholy, the characteristics of genre, which include the type of medieval times, especially the type of “five-character”, the type of language which including reality, fluency, also including his spoken language. The last point is his artistic expression technique which including characters and stories, temporal and spatial correlation, combination of realistic and fictitious, scenery and emotion.The fifth chapter analyzes the versions and the spread of his poems, and statistics that there are eight kinds of versions. Also, I quantitative analysis the situation of spreading and acceptation of Cui’s poems, obtain the conclusion that the most popular works of Cui is the type of five-character octave.
