The Praetorian Guard is a special political and military power in the history of Roman Empire, its emergence is an important symbol of Rome into the Empire period, its existence has been extended to the era of Constantine the Great in the beginning of 4th century AD. In more than three hundred years of its history, the role and position of Praetorian Guard is worthy of our in-depth study, This article will be focuses on the time Julio-Claudian dynasty, hope to clearly show the transition of the relationship between the guards and emperor.Based on existing materials, this paper tries to analyze the relationship of reversal between the Guards and emperor in Julio-Claudian period, the cause and the effect. The article includes Introduction, Main Text and Conclusion. Introduction sums up the comprehensive commentary on the study of the Praetorian Guard about its relevant historical data and modern research in the world. Chapter Ⅰ introduces the creation of the guards in the Augustus area and the balance relationship between Augustus and the guards during this period. Chapter Ⅱ mainly describes how the relationship between the guards and emperor is reversed. Chapter Ⅲ focuses on analyzing the reason why the balance relationship is reversed between the Praetorian and emperor, from the principate,the praetorian guards itself and emperor himself.Then discusses the political and military impact of the relationship reversal between the guards and the Emperor. Conclusion part Sums up the whole paper to a conclusion that the relationship between the guards and the Emperor has experienced great reversal during the Julio-Claudian period, the guards has changed its rule from the emperor’s bodyguards and servants, to a great power that can make or kill the emperor,and this change has a profound impact on the later empire.
