What I hope to show in the thesis is Salinger’s attitudes toward females by clarifing the changes of female images in his early and mid-term writings as well as discussing the heroine of his last book Franny and Zooey. Meanwhile, I intend to dig out the value of Franny’s awakening of feminine consciousness to solve mental perplex and moral crisis of modern people by placing the text in its historical and biographical contexts. The thesis is devided into five chapters. Introduction gives a panoramic view of Salinger’s life and stages of his writing, especially his love experiences and marriages in order to show his attitudes toward females. Chapter one is a general introduction of 3 kinds of female figures in his former writing, including the angel-like females and the witch-like females as well as the metamorphosis of angel-like females. Chapter two mainly discussing the mental crisis and the epiphany of Franny during her growth as well as her self—salvation. Chapter three, I make a detailed discussion about the cultural connotation of the female character Franny, including the Salinger’s worldview, aesthetic standard and philosophic thinking in this novel. Conclusion points out Salinger has made a contribution to the development of American female initiation novel by his depiction of young women.
