Teaching evaluation is an indispensable part of English teaching. Formative assessment is a processing evaluation in teaching, a large number of studies show that formative assessment can promote students’autonomous learning.English reading plays an important role in English learning, at present, many college students have weak autonomous learning ability in English reading, this study applies formative assessment to college English reading teaching, aims to cultivate students’autonomous learning ability in English reading and promote their academic performance in English reading.Based on the theory of formative assessment, the researcher makes various evaluation tools of formative assessment in the process of English reading teaching to carry out an experimental study. The participants of this research are 107 freshmen majoring in math and exhibition of Tianjin Polytechnic University, and they are divided into the control group and the experimental group.During the twelve weeks’classroom teaching experiment, questionnaires, interviews, and tests are applied as the instruments for collecting data. The main research questions are as following:(1)Can formative assessment promote the Non-English major students’academic performance in English reading? (2) Can formative assessment improve the ability of autonomous learning in English reading? If yes, in what way?A conclusion can be drawn from the experimental study:the implementation of formative assessment in college English reading teaching can improve students’ autonomous learning ability in English reading and English reading performance.In addition, there are some limitations of the study, such as the experimental time is not enough, the sample is small and data analysis is not deep enough and etc.
