The essence of Zen Master Xuyun’s Zen thought is the concept of “Seeing Word Zen,” which has shown significant vitality in the restoration and reconstruction of modern Chinese Buddhism. The study of Zen Master Xuyun’s concept of “Seeing Word Zen” can reflect the whole system of his Zen spirit. Thus this thesis took his concept of “Seeing Word Zen” as its subject of study and this study would be approached from five aspects:(1) the precepts foundation of the Seeing Word Zen. This section would address his concept of “taking precept as foundation” and rectifying the Zen temple’s pure rule and regulation.(2) The tathatā ontology and Realizing Self-nature of the “Seeing Word Zen.” This part approached his teaching of “taking tathatā as ontology” and “taking Realizing Self-nature as reality.”(3) The method and order of Realizing Self-nature. This part would be a study of the method and order of Realizing Self-nature regarding his “Seeing Word Zen,” and believed that the order of his Realizing Self-nature Zen was the “First Realization,” “Second Realization ” and “Last Realization.”(4) Merging the Seeing Word Zen with Pure Land School. This part researched the origin of Seeing Word Zen and analyzed the perfection of merging Zen with Pure Land, and pointed out that the “Seeing Word Zen” has interacted value between Texting-case of the history of Zen Buddhism and the Pure Land School’s “chanting Buddha’s name teaching,” indicated that Zen and Pure Land are not two, and that “Self-nature is Amitābha, Mind-only is Pure Land.”(5) The dependent upon the Sutras and treatises. This part pointed out that his Zen teaching depended upon Shurangama Sutra, the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana, the Sixth Patriarch’s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra and Amitābha Sutra; and that his idealism depended upon Suchness Mind(tathatā) teaching of the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana, his state of practice of Zen used the Self Samadhi of the Shurangama Sutra as its guiding theory.
