Through the creation of Late Ming literati, this kind of essay conveys the writers how to treat others and how to cultivate one’s morality. It also reflects their colorful life picture.With the development of the times, the proverbial-style essay peaked in the late Ming dynasty. With the influence of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, "Tong Xinshuo" and "Xing Lingshuo", loads of excellent proverbial-style essays appeared during that time, such as ShenYinyu, SuoLuoguanqingyan, Xiao Chuangyouji, CaiGentan and so on. All of these reflected the late Ming dynasty literati life and their mental situation. At the same time, it also impacted the proverbial-style of Qing dynasty.This dissertation has three chapters, the main ideas will be summarize as follows:The section of introduction mainly states the current research of the proverbial-style essays in Late Ming dynasty. From the monographs to dissertations, this section will expound the specific study of proverbial-style essay. At the end, it shows the idea and thesis of this dissertation.The first chapter is the conspectus of proverbial-style essay. By analysing the original proverbial-style essay, this chapter will explore its characteristics to define the production of proverbial-style essay. This essay will try to study its feature from the format and the words. Specifically, this part combines the rhetoric to analyse these writings. Then, this part will appreciate the language of this kind of literary style. The main point of this essay is the research of this literary style, so this part is the longest part of this essay.The second chapter is about the thought of the Late Ming proverbial-style essay. This dissertation will divide the content of the Late Ming proverbial-style essay into three parts. The first part is about how to treat other people. The second part is about how to improve morality. The last part explains the interest of life. This chapter can exhibit the real life of writers directly. The content of the literary works refer to their life. So this chapter will divide into three parts to show their physical and spiritual traits in three-dimensional parts.The third chapter is about the cultural background of the Late Ming dynasty proverbial-style essay formation. This section aims at exploring how the original and literary thoughts impact the creation of this kind of literary style. One point of the view is the deep thought influence, such as Yang Ming philosophy, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, etc. The other point of the view is the direct literary thought influence, such as "Tong Xinshuo", "Xing Lingshuo" and so on.The last section will briefly summarize the influence of Late Ming dynasty proverbial-style essay to the Qing dynasty proverbial-style essay, and the reason of the differences between these two kinds of literary works.
