Metaphor Theory And Practice In Qian Zhongshu 's Academic Works

Metaphor is one of the figures of speech in Chinese, which has a long history and exuberant vitality, and it has been fully studied in many ways. As we all known that Qian Zhongshu was a distinguished scholar and writer in the twentieth Century and outstanding achievements in the theory and practice of metaphor has been made in his academic papers, however, which were lack of study.This paper will focus on the study of the theories and practice of metaphor in Qian Zhongshu’s academic papers. Firstly, the theory of metaphor will be sorted out from his four books. Tan Yi Lu, Guan Zhui Bian, Song Shi Xuan Zhu and Qi Zhui Ji, and then we use these theories to describe and explain his practice of metaphor in details. Compared the results with the results which has been achieved in the study of Wei Cheng, our aim is to analyze the main difference in different styles, especially in the artistic style and the style of science and technology. According to the changes of ancient and modern style concepts and the different development of metaphor in these two different styles, we’ll finally talk about the positive effects of studying the practice of metaphor in Qian Zhongshu’s academic papers.Besides the introduction and conclusion, there are four main parts of this paper. The first chapter and the second chapter are the analysis of practice of metaphor in the four academic books, which means the first chapter contains the books of Tan Yi Lu and Guan Zhui Bian and the second chapter contains the books of Song Shi Xuan Zhu and Qi Zhui Ji. With some selected typical examples, we’ll analyze the practice of metaphor in three levels, the types of metaphor, the similarities and differences in metaphor and the metaphorical phrases. And then it has been found that the types of metaphor are rich, the metaphorical phrases are wide-ranging and all the practice in his books well reflects his own theory of metaphor.The third chapter is written based on the findings achieved in the first and second chapters, and we’ll compare the findings with the results which have been achieved in the study of Wei Cheng in three aspects, the types, the metaphorical phrases and the functions of metaphor. And it seemed that, although there are differences in some details, the types of metaphor are both rich, and the metaphorical phrases are both wide-ranging in these two kinds of styles. However, when in the comparison of effects, significant differences have been found, and there are different effects in different styles.The fourth chapter will mainly discuss the positive effects of studying the practice of metaphor in Qian Zhongshu’s academic papers. From the diachronic and synchronic point of view, we can see the changes of the concept of ancient and modern styles, and different development of metaphor in literary style and scientific and technological style, particularly, the apparent imbalance of development of metaphor in the scientific and technological style. Through the study above, we can see the abundant practice of metaphor and excellent results in Qian Zhongshu’s academic papers, the style of whose writing is included in the scientific and technological style, and these give us new inspiration in the use of metaphor in the writing of scientific and technological style and new thinking in the development of the concept of modern Chinese style of writing.
