In the process of verbal communication, modest language is a universal language phenomenon. Modest language always be the lubricant of interpersonal relationships whether in our work or in our life. Since ancient times, especially in the eastern countries, modest and polite are the necessary principles abided by the people; it can obtain a harmonious effect during the interpersonal relationship. Especially in the occasion of cross-cultural communication, appropriate or moderate modest language can made the communicator gentle and accomplish, this way could made the communication smoothly. Under the different cultural background, as a kind of linguistic feature, modest language is able to respond the values, cultural characteristic, social psychology and so on between the different countries and different nationalities. The cultural connotation hidden by the modest language is profound. So this article is to reflect the range of Chinese and western countries in the use of modest language, the differences and similarities of the two languages, and analyze the reason of the differences based on comparing the Chinese and English, which can help us to understand the modest language better. In addition, the article will combined the modest language with Chinese language teaching, which can help overseas students to understand modest language better, correct the use of modest language, and eliminate the obstacles of cross-cultural communication during the process of their daily communication in the future. It can avoid the unnecessary pragmatic mistakes.This article is divided into seven chapters, the content of each chapter is as follows:The first chapter is mainly introduced the selected topic significance of the paper, the research status of Chinese and English modest language at home and abroad, and innovation. The second chapter is definite the modesty language based on the theory of pragmatics and cross-cultural communication, and to state the modesty language from two aspects of politeness principle and the moderate principle. The third chapter analysis the similarities between Chinese and English modesty language from three aspects: express appellation, express achievement, and express their views and ideas. Fourth chapter analysis the differences between Chinese and English modesty language from three aspects: express objects, social surroundings and syntactic characteristics. The fifth chapter analyzes the reason of the difference between Chinese and English modesty language, which from religions institutions, context culture and so on. The sixth chapter is analysis the modest language teaching during the teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It mainly discusses that modest language’s status and function during the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and in the process of actual communication, overseas students how to avoid and reduce some pragmatic failures, which can improve the efficiency of cross-cultural communication. The last chapter adopts the method of questionnaire, which to understand students using the frequency of the modest language in the process of cross-cultural communication, the conditions of producing the error and the degree of the overseas students’ minds. It can analysis the modest language more profound under the background of cross-cultural communication, which achieve the purpose of made the communication more smooth, and to provide some references for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
