Tangka (transliterated from Tibetan) is a kind of embroidery done on cloth and or sketched scroll painting. It is a representative art form in Tibetan culture with a wide range of themes and is called "the encyclopedia of Tibetan culture". Its origin can be dated back to the Tubo period. Since the Qingzang railway’s being opened to traffic in 2005, traveling to Tibet has become a popular consuming fashion. In 2006 Tangka was enlisted into the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage; in 2009 Regong art with Tangka as its core was enlisted into the intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. As Tibetology becomes increasingly heated,during recent years Tangka won popularity from more and more people by its brightness in color, solemnity in picture, touch of religious worshiping and its great value in archaeology and artistic appreciation. Under the current circumstance of market economy, Tangka has gradually developed from a monastery art into an industry with ethnicity and territoriality; its artistic style, cultural meaning and commercial value have also changed correspondingly. The Qingzang Tangka industry mentioned in this article is the general term for the economic activities and economic departments concerning the manufacture and sale of Tangka products in Tibet Lhasa and Tongren county of Qinghai Huangnan Tibetan autonomous prefecture where the Tangka sale blossoms the best in domestic market. Tangka industry is an relatively typical ethical economic activity in which Tibetans are the involved the most. Tangka sketchers are at present sale operators and profit gainers and also the major passers and promoters of Tangka art.The introduction starts with the talk about the research background and meaning, sorts out study documentation on Tangka industry, integrates relevant theories on Tangka practitioners, researchers and government to summarize the current situation of Tangka industry. The first chapter introduces the characteristics, categories and meanings of Tangka and summarizes Tangka’s special role and historic meaning in Tibetan ethical faith and the theory support for Tangka industry. The second chapter focuses on the passing and development of Tangka industry, runs through the historic course of Tangka in Tibet, Anduo area of Qinghai and Kangba region of Sichuan, summarizes the manufacturing procedure of current Tangka products, introduces national level passers of Tangka sketch from Tibet, Anduo area of Qinghai and Kangba region of Sichuan respectively and analyses the sects in different places and the similarities and differences. The third chapter analyses the marketization of Tangka industry and mainly sums up the supply and demand of Tangka on the market. The last chapter summarizes the trend of the industry, discusses about the talent issues, industrialization’s influence on the passing of Tangka and the effects of Tangka manufacturing enterprises’ scale on the market and proposes to make improvements in product promotion modes and brand building.Overall, this paper attempts to conduct a systematic analysis on Tibetan Thangka industry, elaborating the phenomena and problems of the traditional process, market economy, and national culture.aimed at Tibetan economic development,Tankgka industry reasonable sustainable development,Tibetan cultural heritage protection as well as the national economy and culture positive interaction on a useful exploration attempts.
