A Study Of The Characters In Cao Yu 's Early Dramas

Cao Yu is a great dramatist in the modern history of Chinese literature. In his famous play "thunderstorm","sunrise","Champaign" and "Beijinger", a group of vivid characters were created, which left an indelible mark in the history of Chinese literature, and are still talked about a lot even today.Chapter one established the research object of this thesis, introduced the research status of Cao Yu and the values of researching the characters in Co Yu’s drama; Chapter two focused on the image of Cao Yu and it’s internal and profound relationship with the main characters in his drama in the early stage, briefly explained the impact of his family situation on his choice in play, briefly retrospect his experience in play, in order to better interpret the unique image building consciousness in his early dramas. Chapter three analyzed two kind of female in dilemma and tragedy. One is working women at the lowest level of the social ladder, such as Sifeng, who wanted to live a happy life, but whose life became a tragedy because of social environment; The other is well-educated women born into rich families, such as Chen Bailu, Su Fang etc., who were once full of beautiful prospect of live and wanted to get rid of the yoke, but eventually end up tragic.Chapter four narrated female character under the influence of power and money, whose dominators are realistic home masters as well as dead or invisible controllers. The representative personage of the former was Zhou Puyuan, and that of the later were Jiao Yanwang and Jin Ba. Some people rebelled, while some yielded to the authority of the dominator, such as Zhou Chong and Zeng Wenqing. Chapter five analyzed Fan Yi and Qiu Hu, who were two typical characters in Co Yu’s drama, and both of whom were abnormal products of fierce conflicts. Their typical images vividly showed the conflicts in humanity.Cao Yu has been trying to find a solution---a way to settle all the injustice, unfairness and disloyalty in society. That’s why he created all kinds of typical characters in his early dramas. He called for real men. He wanted to find a way to happiness for all people. We should cherish the expectation of Mr. Cao, inherit his valuable enlightenment spirit of modern civilization, and strive for the realization of justice, fairness and royalty for individuals, society, nation and even the whole country.
