Shiyou Village’s Nuo Dance is an ancient sacrificial ritual based on witchcraft andsuperstition. It has been passed down for thousands of years. This kind of ritual contains the longhistory of the Chinese nation and abundant folk cultures. Since modern times, with the evolutionof society, folks of Shiyou Village have been inheriting and developing it automatically. Though,as a folk art form, it was under great impact during the Great Cultural Revolution, these villagersstill conquered all obstacles and hardships to protect their Nuo Dance culture. Bearing in mindthe combination of theory and practice, the author of this paper tries to center on the eightprograms of Shiyou Village’s Nuo Dance, to interpret and analyze their content, style andrelevant cultural elements one by one, all based on repeated field trips for the folk art as well asrich investigation and survey data.The paper is mainly divided into three parts: the introduction, three chapters and theconclusion. The introduction is mainly about the objective of the selected subject, its researchtrends, the author’s research condition and the basic approach employed in the study. Chapter oneprovides an overview of Shiyou Village’s Nuo Dance and a detailed interpretation of its currentexisting status quo from a historical perspective. Chapter two primarily sums up and sorts out theritual structures of Shiyou Village’s Nuo Dance; meanwhile, it illustrates the dance in terms offour rituals, that is,“Starting Nuo Dance”,“Nuo Dance Performance”,“Nuo Dance of Searching”,and “Concluding Nuo Dance”. Chapter three, the core chapter of this paper, aims to explore thecultural connotations behind the eight programs of Nuo Dance, from the perspective of its dancemovement vocabulary, so as to discover and explore its rich cultural information and artisticvalue. The conclusion mainly analyzes the influence that modern culture impact has on thisoriginal art form, Nuo Dance, and probes into the possibility of its appropriate inheritance anddevelopment in modern times.
