Alois Haba (1893-1973), a famous Czech composer, theorist and educator of the20th century, has played a crucial role in the exploration and development of themicrotonal music of the century. Haba has blended Microtone music of Czech folkmusic styles with modern new techniques of the20th century perfectly; therefore, theMicrotone musical works he has created contain the essence of folk Czech music. Hisunique style broke a new path for Czech music of the20th century. Thus, it is nodoubt that he should be honored as the pioneer of Microtone music. Not only in thefield of Microtone music where Haba made great achievements, he also contributed alot to professional musical education. He is one of the most influential teachers inPraque Conservatory and has cultured many outstanding composers who havedevoted themselves to folk Czech music, promoting the development of folk Czechmusic in the20th century. In the area of Czech musical theories, Haba’s lifetimetheoretical studies developed a school of his own. His great book, The HarmonicPrinciples of the Quarter-tone System, displays the most detailed Microtone musicaltheories, which has provided very valuable references for further understanding andcreation of Microtone music.Haba is an outstanding composer in the Czech Republic and Europe of thetwentieth century because of his tireless efforts and endless spirit of exploration. He isnot just the pilot of Czech microtonal music, but also a unique composer who blendsthe folk music and modern techniques of the twentieth century perfectly. Therefore,his microtonal music research is also more and more paid attention by the industryand the other musical fellows.Represented by Czech composer Haba, the paper analyzes and summarizes thetheoretical system of microtonal music and ethnic style of the works from the respectof music history and explores the subtleties of microtonal music in the western musichistory with the music creation concept of Haba.The introduction presents the literature review and production of Haba’smicrotonal music briefly.The first chapter introduces Haba’s life experience and his own musical achievements.The second chapter analyzes Haba’s representative work The Second Fantasia, which states the creative features of Haba’s microtonal music of20th century from thefollowing aspects: the vertical and horizontal use of microtone, the uniqueness ofscale and tune, the expansion of musical structure and theme, and the modern rhythm.The third chapter summarizes Haba and his microtonal music from the value ofmicrotonal music of the twentieth century and prominent impact of Haba as thepioneer of microtonal music.The conclusion summarizes the contributions and value of Haba’s microtonalcreation to Czech national and folk music as well as the development of modernmusic in20th century.
