Various characteristics can be found in Kenji Miyazawa’s fairy tales. One of them is abundant body language performance. The expression smile is frequently utilized in Kenji’s fairy tale, which are diverse and of profound implications.The thesis takes Kenji Miyazawa’s juvenile novels and his only self-published Demanding restaurant as the research object, the western comedy theory as the main basis. And on the basis of previous studies, the smile in his fairy tales is researched with the method of text analysis, literature research and illustration.Chapter 1 briefly illustrates the research object, purpose and significance of this report, the research methods and referential theory, as well as the antecedent researches and their remaining problems.Chapter 2 is the core of this thesis, mainly analyzing the different main bodies’ smile in the work of object. The thesis analyzes three functions of “smile”. The conclusions are as follows.1. "Smile" is the emotion vent of main bodies and a reflection of their physiological function. There are two reasons lead to smile: one is others’ interesting words and deeds, the other is that main bodies encounter something cheerful.2. "Smile" conveys emotion and consciousness, which contain positive and negative aspects. The former one is expectation, care, reconciliation and peace of mind, friendliness(love), thought, praise, care, forgiveness, pride, etc. The latter one is as tricks, mockery, frustration, regret and so on.3. The "smile" is of purifying function. The concrete manifestations are as follows. The excluded and unharmorious interpersonal relationship becomes friendly and harmonious. The value of life changes from idea to reality. Unscrupulous and hard world becomes beautiful and happy. The situation on the verge of death turns out to be the plight of rebirth.Chapter 3 analyses its containing profound meanings on the basis of three functions of "smile". 1. It symbolizes the maximum harmony of the whole world. 2. It contains the author’s criticism about the phenomenon of showing unrespect to nature and chasing power blindly. 3. It is full of author’s respect and admire to the working group; 4. It embodies the author’s caring heart of compassion.Chapter4 summarizes the full text.
