Lucian Freud is the representation of contemporary figurative expressionism field, and he is the most influential western artist for Chinese oil painter at the meanwhile. The neuroticism feeling keeps overflowing from Lucian Freud’s art works, which makes us surprised on his analysis ability on human soul. The art works of Lucien Freud possess its specific features in the shape, color, composition, brushwork etc. whereas the style of his works experienced an abrupt change in 1960 s and 1970 s, whose typical symbol turned into the variation of brushwork style.Therefore, we chose brushwork as the content of this research to analysis Lucian Freud’s painting style and find the relationship between brushwork and spirit expression.The relationship between strokes and spirit is talked about preliminarily in the very first chapter. Firstly, the expression of the spirit of TTT on calligraphy style is explored and then extends to the brushwork of oil painting art. Afterward, the basic reason of the difference between the brush work of east and west is analyzed on the ideology and material combining with the meaning of ink technical formulas of western impressionist painting. Eventually, the reason for the popular of Lucian Freud’s paintings is searched from the aspects of freehand brushwork. The representative works of early Lucien Freud tempera technique and later painting direct descriptive analysis are described in chapter two by straightening out the evolution track of the brushwork style and exploring the internal reasons for this kind of change. Furthermore,the strokes in texture, color and picture detail aspects are analyzed and explored the relationship between inquiry strokes and the spiritual expression. The third chapter focuses on exploring the spirit of Lucian Freud’s painting contains and its way of expression. First of all, to find the character and the spirit of Freud, the significant experience in the life of Lucian Freud is talked.Secondly, to explore the spirit characteristics of Lucian Freud’s painting, the common themes of Freud’s works are analyzed combining with the specific works from the portrait of the human body to sublimation gradually.Finally, I want to through the analysis of Lucien Freud’s brushwork to find the way he excavates deeper spiritual and also hope to open the way for Chinese painters.so they can learn and study Lucian Freud better,in order to reached a level of “Drawing the spirit”!...
