Guo Pu(276-324),a famous expert in Exegetical studies,was the author of various works which are all considered as important literature to study archaic and ancient Chinese phonology.This paper,with materials extracted from Notes on Phonology, Notes on Er Ya,Notes on Shanhai Jing and Notes on the Autobiography of King Mu, focus on studying dialect geography during Jin Dynasty. Firstly,by looking through the notes from the books mentioned above,all the entries on dialect geography are calculated.Then analyze those entries and categorize them into different columns based on previous studies.As for the lexicology study,this paper employs the method which is used to study the modern dialectology to categorize the dialects from the notes of Guo Pu.Finally, it compares the differences between modern and ancient Chinese dialects in order to display the panorama of ancient Chinese dialects in Jin Dynasty.The whole paper is divided into five chapters.Chapter One,Introduction.This chapter offers an introduction on the life of Guo Pu,as well as his works,literature review on the study of his works,the purpose,the scope and the meaning of this paper.Chapter Two,Previous Studies on the Categories of Ancient Chinese Dialect Geography.This chapter reflects upon previous studies on the categories of ancient Chinese dialect geography in order to fully understand the detailed picture of this field of study.Chapter Three,Study the Dialect Geography of Jin Dynasty through the lens of the study of Guo Pu’s notes. This chapter closely examines the place names and dialect names from the notes of Guo Pu, and tries to lay out the categories of dialects of Jin Dynasty.Chapter Four,Characteristics Analysis on the notes of dialect geography from Guo Pu. This chapter analyzes the dialects from Guo Pu’s notes and compares the differences between ancient and modern Chinese dialects.Chapter Five,Conlusion. This chapter draws the conclusions from the whole points made by this paper, and comments on the strengths and weaknesses of this paper.
