As one of the directors who start the revolution of “New Hollywood”, Robert Altman gets less attentions from Chinese film industry than Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg and others who stay in the same period with him. And the most popular topics about his movies are the superposition of multiple track technology, mobile zoom lens, group performance and the Network Structure. But from the view of the American film history, Altman is need to mention. His flamboyant narrative style and attitude affected the modern American movies and TV series. And the nature of life in his films is obviously more valuable than technical innovation.This article attempts to put emphasis on Robert Altman?s film by “auteur theory” and the theory of narratology, in order to explore and demonstrate the deep meaning of the film, as well as the narrative style that be used to achieve the meaning. Outstanding the perfect echo of the narrative form and the main thought. In addition, except expound the Altman?s Network Structure by using concrete examples, this article also describes the Linear Structure that weakening the causal logic in the early works of the director in details(this is rarely mentioned in China). In order to let more people knows Altman, and richer the studies of Altman?s movie.The first chapter is the introduction part. "The long goodbye" as an example to analyze the Linear Structure that weakening the causal logic in the early works of Altman; “Short Cuts” as an example to analyze the Network Structure that constructing by the inevitable and accidental contact between characters.The fifth chapter is the conclusion part. Mainly summarized Altman?s influence on modern movies and TV series.
