The Potential Impact Of National Consciousness On Japanese Design

Chinese designers have earned a lot of respects in an international context due to the popularity of’made in China’. However, there still have a large disparity for Chinese designs compare to the world advanced level. Hence, one of the most urgent long-term task for Chinese design industry is to catch up with and even surpass the world standard. Japanese designs are the most convenient’teacher’for Chinese designers compare with other design works. Both China and Japan are essentially different with western countries, and as a neighbor, Japan provides us with a very practical reference system since we both belong to the East-Asian Cultural circle and remain a lot of similarity in tradition.According to Sun Sai/Xi, national consciousness is a reflection of nationality in people’s minds, it is decided by nation and produces reaction to nation under certain conditions. There are obvious signs of this kind of reaction contained in Japanese designs. Through studying Japanese design works, it is not hard to find out that national consciousness impresses deeply on Japanese designs since traditional culture is the headspring of them. This paper starts from this point, widely collet the evidences that Japanese traditional culture and national consciousness have been playing a vital role in Japanese modern designs while seeking theoretical foundations from previous researches and studies. In addition, this paper analyzes the way in which Japanese designs maintain national traditions and keep innovative while learning from western countries. For the aim of inspiring the improvement of Chinese design industry, this paper stands in the view of social and cultural anthropology to explore the impacts of Japanese national consciousness showed in Japanese designs. All in all, the main purpose of this paper is to achieve the development of Chinese design from Chinese traditional culture to a world-class level by drawing on the experience of Japanese designs.
