Research On Chen Xue - Lin 's Historiography

This paper reviews the research situation of Hok lam Chan’s historical works domestic and foreign; introduces Hok lam Chan’s life and scholarship; analyzes, organizes and generalizes systematically Hok lam Chan’s study of historiography achievements and methods of research, which clarifies the status of his historical research further. In the research field of history in the Sung and Chin, the writer organizes some published important works of various periods from the respects of Hok lam Chan’s early study about Chin history, the participation of "Fu Haibo plan", and the research about history in Sung and Chin, and focus on the analysis about the achievements of orthodox theory in Chin Dynasty. In the field of historical research in Yuan and Ming, the writer selects several well-known research programs which Hok lam Chan participated including the " biographies plan in Ming Dynasty ", " celebrity biography in Yuan" and "The Cambridge History of Ming Dynasty in China" and so on to analyze; confirms his contributions in ordering and exploring the important documents in Ming Dynasty, and the research on historical events and research on legends of the building of old Peking and so on. In the evaluation of historiography study, the writer focuses on organizing the views of experts and scholars. As one of Chinese American historians who were active in the international academic community and have both the base of Chinese learning and the theory of Western learning in the second half of the 20th century, researching Hok lam Chan’s historical works and thoughts can be used for reference, and we should do deeper discussion and research.
