This dissertation bases on Zhang Zao’s poems and American poet Wallace Stevens’s work translated by Zhang Zao, trying to find Zhang Zao’s way to explore and understand the profound oriental aesthetic system by taking advantage of Western literature and culture and finally to find new tension and melting point between East and West. The first part is about ZhangZao’s translation work. As a famous poet, Zhang tried a new way to mix the foreign poetic flavour with chinese modern languages and imagery. The second part will point out that Wallace Stevens influences ZhangZao’s poetics and creation from macro themes and micro objects and spurs him on to different grand style. The final part puts this complex relationship of translation and creation in historical perspective to figure out the characteristic of translation and creation in the comtemporary Chinese poetics.
