There is a growing demand for translation of social science academic papers from English to Chinese, which is viewed as a way to understand the European and American culture. However, subject to various differences in history, culture and customs between two languages, the translator may seem like an anxious person who holds a bunch of keys in a dark house, fumbling for both the keyhole and the right key. Moreover, the translation of academic papers differs from that of normal non-literature, posing a great challenge to translators to flexibly using translation skills based on cautious thinking. By taking the translation of an academic paper which studies the legal consequences of dating violence, this paper explores some basic techniques and approaches for producing a high-quality Chinese translation of English social science academic papers:the application of flexible translation skills, such as amplification and omission, syntactic restructuring and conversion on the basis of accurate understanding by checking background information of the original text as well as analyzing parts of speech and lexical meanings of certain words.
