In many years’ study of children’s picture books, it is discovered thatthe “intended blank” is frequently used by authors of such books as an artistictechnique. However, a relevant complete theoretical system is still lacking.Through reading and learning from a number of domestic and foreign children’sbook, comparison and analysis are carried out to study the application of blanksin real-life cases. Then it can be systematically summarized that blanks inchildren’s picture books can represent remote moods, spatial distance, shiftof time and space, pictorial focus, imaginary space, psychological distance, and can change visual impressions and reading tempos. The author combines his experience in making children’s picture booksduring the past few years and the discussion with Prof. Yao Hong on the adoptionof blanks in children’s picture books. It is found that using blanks in conceptplanning and concrete representation of consciousness can enrich the creationalsystem of children’s picture books, enhance those books’ readability andinteractivity, and increase the fun of reading.
