Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India, the earliest geographical book about foreign coutries in field trips in Chinese history, is a travel book recorded by Eminent monk named Faxian during his journey to the west. The geographic scope mentioned in this book covers China, Central Asia, South Asia and southeast Asia, and involves such aspects as geography, traffic, religion, culture, the product, customs, social development, and economic system etc.. Its contents make it a very important material to study the Asian history of the5th century. The book was written in the Jin and Song dynasties, the period of rapid development of Chinese, especially the great changes of location words. Therefore, the selection of Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India to study the location words owns its typical importance. The vocabulary in Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India showed a much more spoken tendency than it in other literatures. According to related researches, Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India contains more foreign vocabularies and spoken words, besides the inheritance of ancient Chinese words. Compared with other literatures at the same time in ancient China, Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India truly reflects the language of Jin and Song dynasties. The middle ancient times is the ancient Chinese grammar critical period fo development, many source of modern Chinese grammar phenomena can be found in medieval literature. During this period, location words changed quickly:Changes in structural forms, Wider extentions in Semantic Analysis, Variations in Syntactic Functions. But the academic research in location words starts late, more concentrated study in modern Chinese location words. Aimed at providing research methods and theoretical, Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India is selected to do some study in its location words.Adopting the method of combining quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, this paper mainly focus on the sematic and gramma studies of the location words in the book. With description and analysis, this paper aims at revealing the features of location words in medieval times through comprehensive studies of location words in Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India. There five parts totally in this paper: Preface:Mainly introduces Faxian’s Pilgrimage to India, its text and research situation and importance, the definition of location words, and the research methods and principles of the paper. The first part:structural form analysis of location words. Location words are divided into two types:localizers and composite localizers. And composite localizers contain prefix composite localizers, suffix composite localizers, and compound composite localizers and other types of composite localizers. But localizers occupy a larger preportion. As for forms used, independently-used localizers and the suffix are more common. The second part:Sematic Analysis of location words. From this part, this paper reveals significance of space and non-space. Non-space significance includes:scope semantic, time semantics, social relations semantics, degree semantic. Space significance is the basic meaning of location words, which is more used. And the comes scope semantic, time semantics, social relations semantics, degree semantic. This extended semantic is more common in localizers than in composite localizes. The third part:Syntactic Functions studies of location words. From this part, this paper finds out that location words can be used as subject, object, predicate, attribute, and adverbial, and complement. But, location words are more used as subjects, objects, attribute and adverbial, while are less used as predicate and complement. What’s more, localizers have a comprehensive syntactic function, while syntactic functions of composite localizers are comparatively less. Conclusion:Based on the overall analysis of location words:the numbers, structural forms, sematic features and syntactic functions in the book, this paper draw a conclusion that location words develops in all aspects, which meets the trend of development of Chinese in medieval times.
