E.M.Forster is one of the premiere England novelists in the the first half of thetwentieth century.In the period of transition, Forster created five novels which titledwhere angels fear to tread, the longest journey, view room, Howard estate, A passageto India.They reflected on his writing style of both traditional color and innovataryfactors,which achieved mutual penetration. Since the1960s, the critic have paidmore and more attention on the modern idea of Forster’s novels,particularly theuse of the symbolic skills in his works. This paper is focoused on the symbol,and isaimed to comb and explore the writers humanism connotation by analyzing thedetails of symbol which associated with theme in the novel.Foster has been famous for maintaining both the tradition and social justice ofthe bourgeois. His yearning for “connect”, and the exploration of “connect”,constitutes the important theme of his novels.He opposed imperialist policy andbelieve in peoples natural emotions. He also emphasized the importance of personalcontact between individuals. This theme still has a realistic significance in growingeconomy.And how to find the balance between the spiritual civilization and materialcivilization is worth a humanistic care among every thoughtful man.As a result, the basic ideas and construction of this study is determined.It isdivided into3chapters. The first chapter exposes the environmental symbol of thenovel,which espectively analyzes the connotation of exotic,residence,plants andanimals.The second chapter involves three aspects of character symbol, including thesymbolic interpretation about male friendship, mysterious female image, and suddendeath figures. This two chapters have summarized the characteristics of fosterssymbol in detail. As well as symbolism, this research is focused on the theme of theworks which displays in his concept of “connect”. By furtherly mining the symbol ofthe novel, and contacting the view between the symbol and theme,this paperinterprets and explores throughout the concept of “connect”,which including theconnection of heterogeneous culture,the connection of industrial civilization whit thenatural,and the connection of interpersonal communiacation.
