As modern and contemporary female Chinese writers, Bing Xin and Yang Jiang, one holds high the "flag of love", the other wears an "invisible cloak" of reason, are quite outstanding in the literature of the20th century. Although they shared some similarities in their social backgrounds, family environments, religious beliefs, and writing styles, distinctions between them do exist, especially the differences of their emotional projection and feminist consciousness. This paper starts with the emotional projections of Bing Xin and Yang Jiang, making a specific analysis of the differences of the emotional projections in their writing. Then the paper explores the reason why they have different emotional projections as well as their different feminist consciousnesses formed upon their emotional projections. Through the discussion and comparison of the two female writers, this paper aims to probe into the relationships between literature and society as well as literature and female. The value and charm of Bing Xin’s and Yang Jiang’s works in literature have also been highlighted through the analysis of their writing styles.This paper is composed of the following parts:The introduction discusses the research status of and the necessity to conduct this comparative study on the two writers. Although abundant case studies on Bing Xin and Yang Jiang have been carried out, few of them involve with the comparative study of the two. Thus it is quite necessary to conduct a comparative study of the two writers’ respective writing styles, which in return will aid in a better understanding of the feminine characteristics in their writings.The first section mainly talks about the formation of Bing Xin’s "benevolence" and Yang Jiang’s "wisdom". The analysis has been done through three aspects:the social background aspect, difficulty in come into being and the favorable turn in dilemma; the family environment aspect, influences of a literary family and a happy marriage; the cultural formulation aspect, influences of the differences between Chinese and western cultures as well as religion. Occupying important positions of the Chinese literature in the20th century, Bing Xin and Yang Jiang have similar conditions for literature creation. This chapter interprets why "philosophy of love" presented in Bing Xin’s works while the wisdom of reason frequently appeared in the writings of Yang Jiang. Section two illustrates the different choices made by Bing Xin and Yang Jiang in being a man and writing. Bing Xin chooses to be accompanied by love, explaining the "philosophy of love" that she firmly believed in the whole life."Love" is an inexhaustible source and motivation of Bing Xin’s creations. The love becomes more beautiful through her writing of poems and prose. Yang Jing, on the contrary, chooses to wear an "invisible cloak" of reason to observe the human nature, implicitly analyzing human things and thinking about life itself. Reason always plays a leading role in Yang Jiang’s work, which has purified and refined emotion. She uses an implicit, humorous, and ironic comedy way to express intellectuals concerns about life.Section three presents the artistic charm of Bing Xin’s and Yang Jiang’s work through the analysis of their literature writing and translation. The structure arts, linguistic features, rhetorical skills or even the sources of their translation, and their translation skills can reflect the emotional projections of the writer to different extend.Section four is about the respective discussion of the self construct of Bing Xin and Yang Jiang, and their interpretation and construction of female identities in their works. Both the "new understanding wife and love mother" doctrine held by Bing Xin and the reasonable attitude adopted by Yang Jiang to examine emotion have offered an strong impact and challenge to the mythology of "male authority". They give a reposition of female roles and start a reconstruction of female identities, helping them successfully break through the roles played in family and career.The positions and values together with the limitations of Bing Xin and Yang Jiang have in modern and contemporary Chinese literatures have been pointed out in section five. As writers rather than female writers, Bing Xin and Yang Jiang are quite outstanding in the literature world. They show special charms not only as a man but also in their writings. Undoubtedly, there will be some limitations when they make choices and realize their values.The last section concludes the whole paper and further discusses the significance of make a comparison between Bing Xin and Yang Jiang.The existence of Bing Xin and Yang Jiang can be regarded as a miracle in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. Through their more than70years of creation, the developmental trajectories of our era can be reflected; the heart journey of female intellectuals of one generation can also be presented. So the study has a great significance and research value no matter in the literature history or in culture history.
