Figure painting, as the earliest category of Chinese painting, has a long tradition and also formed a relatively complete theoretical system and unique aesthetic standards. How to improve its expression and compose modern Chinese figure painting not contradicting with the tradition may be a big problem faced by many painters. One of the key improvements is finding out new techniques. In all kinds of Chinese paintings, landscape painting has more expressional brush techniques. And many figure painters have absorbed these methods in their works that makes an effective improvement. Here in this article, I will use “Cunfa”(brush techniques) as a talking case, combiningwith practical experiences by predecessors andtheoretical elaboration and image analysis, in order to illustrate the importance of landscape painting techniques used in the composition of figure paintings.
