The commercialization of art gains considerable momentum with the rapid development of market economy and digital media. Aided by the mass media, commercialized art enters into people’s lives as an important object of cultural as well as material spending. Music reality shows, as a result, are created and become quite popular under such an environment. Admittedly, music as the core of the show should be assigned higher priority, but because of various complicated situations, music is not regard as the most crucial part of the show and in China, the qualities of music reality shows vary greatly, showing a trend of being diversified and chaotic. Moreover, some music reality shows, with the purpose of pursuing a higher viewing rate, consciously ignore the music, making the visual images of the show more important than the sound, the story behind singers more significant than the artistic value, and the entertaining effect more central than the music itself. On the other hand, the professional music contest shows, which take music as its sole criterion, are not paid attention to by the public, and thus its positive aspects are not expressed. Regarding such a paradox, several questions surface. How do we guide the public view about music appreciation? Do we need to make creative adaptation of or simply imitate those music talent shows aired in foreign countries? From where do those problems arise and what can we do to address the problems? Taking into account the emergence of music talent shows, the various types of music that appeared in the shows, and the role music plays in those shows, this thesis intends to analyze theoretically the status quo of those shows and its musical characteristics and tries to find the possible flaws of the shows, in order to provide a productive perspective for the healthy development of music talent shows in China.
