Xu Han studied from the famous scholar Wang Yinzhi, he is the author of “Bie Ya Ding”,“Pan Gu Xiao Lu Quan Ji”,“Ji Ning Zhi Li Zhou Zhi” and other works. He inherited therigorous academic attitude from the Qianjia School, he gained a wide appreciation from otherscholars in the Qing Dynasty1820to1860and he enjoys the reputation of “Shan Zuo Xu Han”.Xu Han lived in troubled times, now his specialized publications which were published at thattime no longer exist. We take “Pan Gu Xiao Lu Quan Ji” which was collected by Yuan Xingyunas the material of our research to study Xu Han’s contribution to the scholium. We dive thecontents into phonetic notation,interpretation,collation of three parts, and we analyze andconclude his characteristics of scholium.Phonetic is one of most important contents of exegesis, it is also an important element of XuHan’s study. The phonetic contents of Xu Han include the following kinds: ancient pronunciation,polyphone, borrowed words. The method of phonetic notation include “zhiyin”,“duruo”and“fanqie”. Interpretation is also an important element of exegesis. Xu Han not only focus onthe interpretation of the words, but also pay attention to the laws and the name of the objects,also focused on the elucidation of righteousness. His research content is very extensive: Analysisof archaic and modem words,under the guise of the word, words such as variant phenomenafitness of discrimination; Explain the words; Explain the meaning of the sentences on the basisof interpretation of the words; Analyze the punctuation of the sentences, to help readersunderstand context correctly; In order to make it more accurate understanding of the originalmeaning of the article, Xu Han analyzed the article-level; Expound the truth of the scriptures;Revealing parts of speech,, adjectives, and other parts of speech were the words rolling clearlystated; Explain object names, names, place names, laws and institutions; Provide moreillustrations for the viewpoints which are not sufficient proof. The interpretation methods of XuHan are summarized in the following areas: Through the same sound, similar pronunciation,phonogram and the change of pronunciations to explore, these are basic forms of “Yin Xun”; Byanalyzing the Chinese characters to explain the meaning of words; Explain meanings accordingto the context meaning, history, culture and experience of life. From the collation of view,themain collations include corrections of false words,corrections of inverted text, the identificationof missing words and superfluous words, corrections of the incorrect sequence. Xu Han used“Dui Jiao”,“Ben Jiao”,“Ta Jiao” and “Li Jiao” to correct the mistakes of ancient books. Finally,we summarize the features from his exegetical practice: The use of “inference meanings fromsounds” is largely; Good at summarizing exegetical General Orders and details; Elucidateexegetical and related theories, analysis and comparison, sum rules; His practice embody thedistinctive pragmatic attitude toward research. In short, the exegetical contents of Xu Han are abundantly, his exegetical methods arescientific and reasonable. Xu Han not only get the innovations in exegetical theory and practice,but also reflect the distinctive style of exegesis, and makes a contribution to the exegetical fieldin the late Qing Dynasty. His achievements are not up to the height of Wang Niansun and WangYinzhi, but his exegesis is also an indispensable part of the Qing Dynasty exegesis.
