| This thesis attempts to find out something about metaphors used in Englishsports news reporting in order to make it easier for people to better understand themand get to know about cultural impact on English metaphors.Within the framework of metaphor theory, the present thesis is the study ofmetaphors in sports news reporting from a cognitive perspective. It starts with areview of influential metaphor theories, and then summarizes the characteristics ofsports news reporting. The study is carried out through analysis of metaphors whichcome from news reporting on the website of the New York Times concerning2010World Cup ranging from June11th to July12th,2010. By analyzing selectedmetaphors, this thesis tries to prove that there are a huge number of metaphors insports news reporting. In addition, we could tell that both reporters and readersconsciously and unconsciously discuss about sports by means of metaphor. Thussupport Lakoff and Johnson’s viewpoint that metaphor is everywhere in our ordinarylife. We think and act, in fact, in a metaphorical way.This thesis is making an effort to discuss metaphor in a relatively newperspective. It is open to be questioned and heightened. Any helpful suggestions andcriticism will be accepted.This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter one gives a brief introduction to thewhole thesis. It introduces the general of the thesis, the significance of metaphorresearch, the layout of the thesis and the research methods. Chapter two focuses onearlier studies on metaphor, especially influential theories by way of reviewingrelevant literature. Chapter Three summarizes the knowledge of sports news reportingincluding its concepts, structure, classification, and so on. In Chapter Four, we makean analysis of metaphors selected from2012World Cup news reporting on thewebsite of the New York Times. In the Chapter Five, we discuss specific culturalmodels of metaphor and the influence of culture on metaphors in sports newsreporting. Chapter Six is the conclusion of this thesis. It makes a short account on themajor points of former analysis. At the same time, it offers implications of the studyand suggestions for the future. |
