This paper summarizes and describes materials concerning Xiao Qing Long with Xiao Chai Hu Decoction from three aspects.Part One:A literature review of Phlegm-Rheum (Tan Yin) Disease and Shao Yang Disease, covering the physiology of Water-Rheum (Shui Yin) and Shao Yang; the historical origins, etiology and pathomechanism of Phlegm-Rheum Disease; the scope, location, pathomechanism and main symptoms of Shao Yang Disease; the relationship between Phlegm-Rheum Disease and Shao Yang Disease; and the treatment principles and formulae selection for Phlegm-Rheum Disease and Shao Yang Disease.Part Two:A literature review of Xiao Qing Long Decoction, analyzing its etymology, clauses and prescriptions, to understand its original meaning. A detailed summary covering Formula-Syndrome (Fang Zheng) and clinical research, and usage in conjunction with other formulae, to learn the existing clinical applications of Xiao Qing Long decoction.Part Three:A study on the clinical experience of Dr. Zhang Lishan in using Xiao Qing Long with Xiao Chai Hu Decoction. Objective:Through retrospective case analyses, the clinical experience and efficacy of Dr. Zhang Lishan in using Xiao Qing Long with Xiao Chai Hu Decoction for the treatment of respiratory disorders was summarized.Method:Case selection, form filling, data entry and processing, results analysis, experience summary, and efficacy evaluation were employed. Results:Though Phlegm-Rheum Disease and Shao Yang Disease are closely related, there is little literature on the treatment of and use of Xiao Qing Long with Xiao Chai Hu Decoction on comorbid disease. Through the study of Dr Zhang Lishan’s clinical experience in using Xiao Qing Long with Xiao Chai Hu Decoction for the treatment of respiratory disorders, its indications are summarised as follows:copious, white sputum that is easy to cough (dilute, foamy or thick sputum is atypical in Xiao Qing Long Decoction syndrome); thirst, dry or itchy throat, bitter taste in mouth (Shao Yang Disease Syndrome); tongue is usually enlarged, fat, dark or pale with thin or greasy coating (a yellow tongue coating is atypical in Xiao Qing Long Decoction syndrome); pulse is usually wiry or slippery. The efficacy of Xiao Qing Long with Xiao Chai Hu Decoction in treating Phlegm-Rheum with Shao Yang Disease is significant, with the 7-day efficacy at 75.41% and the 14-day efficacy at 92.31%. The optimal treatment course is between 2 to 4 weeks. This study has expanded the clinical applications of Xiao Qing Long Decoction with other formulae, deepened the understanding of the pathomechanism of Phlegm-Rheum with Shao Yang Disease and provided support for the use of Xiao Qing Long with Xiao Chai Hu Decoction on Phlegm-Rheum with Shao Yang Disease.
