The Research Of Automatic Recognition Of Vehicle License Plates

With the quick development of software and hardware technology of computer, digital image processing is applied widely in every day of life. But, in the practice use, the research of the application methods to overcome the practice limit and to enhance the anti-disturb ability of the system is still a task of great challenge.The vehicle license plate recognition system is an intelligent traffic control system based on image processing and technique of character recognition. It can be applied in highways, parking areas, bridges or tunnels etc. The system can also help a operator and improve the overall quality of a service.In this paper a system for the automatic recognition of vehicle license plates based on the digital image processing is presented, and gives a set of designing thinking , designing scheme and designing measure.The recognition process consists of three main phases. First, a segmentation phase locates the license plate within the complicated image, so we made a research of color based and gray-scale based vehicle license plate location. Then a procedure based on feature projection estimates some image parameters needed to normalize the license plate characters. Finally we used a modified template matching method toaccomplish the recognition of characters in the license plates. The result of experiment show that the whole system is effective, and it's high efficiency and reliable.
