In recent years, with the development of Internet, XML made great progresses and was widely applied in the field of electronic business, network publication, wireless application and content management. XML separates contents of information from representation form to make applications extract the information in a simple and valid way. It also displays the same data with XML style language (XSL) in many styles. XML increasingly takes the place of HTML because it is more applied to information exchange and expression on Web and easily handled with computer to become a standard for data representation and exchange. XML-DBMS is a database system that can manage XML data and files in applications, which provides the immediate access or cross query of XML files and segments . A lot of XML data will appear on Internet with the development of it. So, XML database which stores XML data will be the focus of the world of computer science and technology.The thesis researches XML-DBMS that stores and queries XML data realized on relational database because of the ripe relational-DBMS and good capability to dispose great number of data. This thesis studies that XML file is stored in relational-DBMS to provide the biggest activity and operational briefness by using relational-DBMS as the inner layer of XML-DBMS on the foundation of traditional XML data storage. Query efficiency is improved by the adoption of definite strategies to reduce memory space. This thesis studies how to retrieve efficiently XML data by optimizing query schema and indexing with XML data.
