Since 1990 the technology of virtual reality (virtual enviroment) has always been one of hotspots in information field research, development and application. The development of virtual reality technology, scene simulation technology and computer graphic technology has greatly put forward the development of 3D terrain virtual enviroment and scene simulation which have bright future in application.The important features of virtual enviroment are immerse,interactive and image that give challenge to realize image reality and real-time rendering in 3D terrain virtual enviroment and scene simulation actually. There are conflicts between image reality and real-time rendering. As the image becomes true to nature, the model needs being more delicate, and more time is need. More complicated the model is , more difficult the real-time rendering is to complete because of the limitation of computer hardware performance. Then, users will not tolerate this case.The paper describes the sketch of virtual enviroment and scene simulation, and studies the general process of virtual enviroment and scene simulation, including light models, texture mapping, real-time visibility culling,real-time terrain walkthrough, level of details and multi-resolution tree, and researches important algorithms that effect image reality and real-time rendering, specilly multi-resolution quadtree model and mutil-texture mapping. Additionally, nature scene simulating, fraction and particles system are introduced. A 3D terrain virtual environment and scene simulation system framework are constructed.
