With the approaching of IT era, simple media service can' t satisfy people's need. Therefore, much attention has been focused on how to provide better service under the present condition. ITU-T has released some standards about multimedia communication in the past several years, especially H.323 Standard, which provides a unifiable standard for multimedia communication based on IP communication.During the past 20 years, DSPs has broader applications in the field of communication for the reasons that, it fits more complicated digital signal processing than MCU, and it can execute more complex algorithm with the lower costs.The development of the multimedia communication protocol and the DSP chip makes the designing and realization of videophone system, especially that of IP videophones based on H.323, praticable.The core of video communication is the image encoding and decoding. H264 is the latest video coding standard, which is developed by Joint Video Team (JVT) joined by both ISO/IEC Motion Picture Experts (MPEG) and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG). Compared with the previous standards, under the same image quality, it has better encoding efficiency as well as better Internet adaptability and error robustness. Therefore, it is considered wildly as the next-generation video coding standard.Several basic problems such as the necessity, methods of video coding and the system structure of IP video phone are described in this thesis firstly. Various methods of compressing and processing of video signal are specifically discussed. Then some innovations of H.264 protocol are described. Finally, video coding of H.264 has been simulated, then Intra coding of H.264 has been simulated on the TMS320C6711 DSK board.In this paper, Chapter One describes the foreground of IP videophone and its construction. Chapter Two introduces the theory of image coding. Thesummarization of H.264 is introduced in Chapter Three. Chapter Four introduces the arithmetic of H.264 in detail. The implement of Intra prediction on DSP is introduced in Chapter Five.
