The scope and use of Internet are astonishing and are influencing almost every part of society. Among the numerous changes brought by the Internet is the emergence of electronic commerce. The Internet is growing in terms of both use and infrastructure. A greater number of individuals and businesses around the globe are getting involved in transactions over the Internet and concurrently e-commerce has an increasingly significant impact on operations of businesses. One of the key fundamentals of any successful application design is the system architecture. This paper presents the applications of e-commerce and discusses an online sales system (online shop) constructed on multi-tier technology architecture infrastructure. The multi-tier architecture signals a powerful computing trend and is currently having a profound impact on both enterprises and web-based applications. Online purchases are run on computer applications that support online purchases and ordering. With the increasing amount of customers online, it is apparent that a reliable, scalable purchase and ordering fulfillment-developed process is a requirement. Thus building scalable, flexible, secure and highly available applications is necessary to process in becoming functional as an e-commerce entity in the electronic market place. In the three-tier architecture also referred to as the multi-tier architecture, a middle tier is added between the user system interface client environment and the database management server environment. The independence of this middle tier (business logic) from presentation (user system interface) and data is known to present several benefits such as flexibility, increased performance, scalability, manageability, improved security, extensibility etc. This paper contends that in a multi-tier architecture; the middle tier can interact with the client and the database independently to demonstrate the optimal quality of service for customers that this architecture design can provide for electronic businesses. The adoption of Internet standards tied in with enormous popularity of the Web has changed architecture of distributed computing. The multi-tier architecture of the Web is an ideal environment for the development of component-based applications, specifically small online sales shops. Multi-tier applications distributed over Internet standard networks are gaining increasing popularity, and rapid growth is predicted in these distributed systems in coming years.
