Study And Application Of Image Databases

With the development of the technology of multimedia, the size of digital image collections increases rapidly. Then how to manage these images effectively so as to make full use of them? As the solution, image databases have became one of the most active research areas in the past few years. Rapid development took place in the area during the past ten years, but there are still many problems to be solved.First, image databases, its key techniques, its related standards and research are introduced and the author's opinions are presented. Second, the design and development of management information system of vehicles for violation, which is a practical application of image databases in traffic control, are introduced. Finally, some new algorithms on feature extraction are presented. A new algorithm on edge feature extraction, using the combination of edge magnitude histogram and edge angular histogram, is proposed. Analysis and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only get over the disadvantages of the existing algorithms, but also can express the content of image effectively. Two methods of color histogram creation in HSV space are proposed in addition. Experimental results show that these two methods achieve higher performances than the traditional method of histogram creation.
