Optical Burst Switching (OBS), proposed in recent years, is a new promising optical switching technology. A new network resource reservation mechanism, Differentiated Resource Reservation (DRR), for OBS is proposed by us. Based on current reservation mechanisms in OBS, by combining the burst assembly algorithm in edge nodes with the resource reservation scheme in core nodes and by introducing the concept of "burst flow", DRR changes the essential units of resource reservation. Moreover, by the use of "piggyback request" techniques in core nodes, differentiated type of resource reservation are presented for per burst and per "flow" in core nodes. It is shown by the simulation results that DRR can improve the performance of burst loss and increase the utilization of the bandwidth in OBS networks, better than current reservation mechanisms. In this thesis, the OBS technology is overviewed firstly, with the present shortcomings pointed out. Then the DRR mechanism is proposed and introduced in detail. A simulation network model established on the OPNET Modeler to simulate the DRR mechanism is also described. Finally the simulation results made on this simulation model are given and analyses of the performance of DRR mechanism are made.
